As a non-representational painter and sculptor, Richard focuses on the compositional elements to create an enduring form of visual poetry. The play of light and shadow on architectural and organic forms guide and inspire his work. He often uses a subdued “Northwest” palette to encourage a focus on the design components. His work has been described as complex, thoughtful, and well composed.
Richard holds a BFA and MFA from Washington State University where he received a one-year scholarship to study art at Nihon University in Tokyo, Japan. He also received a one-year sabbatical to study art and architecture in Western Europe, Israel, Russia, and Turkey from the Oak Harbor School District culminating in an art history program. Retiring in 2006 after a 30-year career as an art educator at the secondary level, he began working full time as an artist.
