Watercolor artist Randy Emmons is our Featured Artist for the month of June. Randy paints local scenes in his own special and very recognizable style. Some people say they are “wonky”. Others say they make them happy. Randy says that is his aim - to make people feel good. His painting method is to try to lay his watercolors down clean and crisp, with the whites intact, making each painting truly sparkle.

Randy will be at Penn Cove Gallery on Tuesday, June 6, from 10-5:30 pm with his brushes, paints and easel. It's a great time to stop in, see him in action, and talk with Randy about his techniques.

Linnane Armstrong is Penn Cove Gallery's April Artist of the Month

3/29/2017

Picture2013 Coupeville Arts & Crafts Festival poster art by Linnane Armstrong.
The work of relief printmaking artist, Linnane Armstrong, will be featured in Penn Cove Gallery for the month of April. Linnane creates woodcut and linocut prints inspired by the dramatic landscapes and natural elements of her Whidbey Island home.  Her colorful and monochrome images use value and pattern in ways that draw the viewer deep into the scene.

Linnane begins most pieces by sketching on location and taking some reference photos. Later in her studio, she completes a more finished layout sketch for the piece, detailing the composition, values, and in some cases color. Most of her linocuts are printed in one color, either designed as monochrome prints, or awaiting hand-applied watercolor paintings over the finished prints. To create a multiple color woodcut, Linnane carves a separate block of wood for each color in the design, printing them in layers to achieve the full image. Each hand-printed block print may have slight natural variances can appear from one print to the next, adding to the uniqueness and charm of these original artworks.

Stop in gallery to see Linnane's exquisite work.

Jim Short is Penn Cove Gallery's Featured Artist for March

2/23/2017

Artist Jim Short is Penn Cove Gallery's Artist of the Month for March.  Jim rescues homeless wood. His turnings often come from local trees headed for the landfill or a stove. He enjoys the wood's connection to Whidbey Island’s climate and community. A signature of his work is highlighting "imperfections." Forms are developed on the lathe as the wood allows. Most pieces are turned green, allowed to dry and then turned again, sanded and finished. Other green pieces are turned to a finished form and left to find their own shape and texture. Finishes are generally different combinations of shellac, tung oil, walnut oil and beeswax.

Jim will be at Penn Cove Gallery on Saturday, March 11, 2017 from 10AM to 5PM along with a few of his wood turning tools.  It's a great time stop in and talk with Jim about his techniques.
