Ivy Breen - pastels
I feel art is a verb and I approach my art as such. It’s never about the completed piece, it’s about the doing or the journey. There are many times I have stood at the edge of a field or watched a cloudy sky and been literally brought to tears. There is an internal language within me that screams to be spoken in color and form to express what I am feeling at that moment. The completed painting stands as a testament to that journey of seeking, finding and doing.
I have been fortunate to live in the west, coming from Montana, Idaho, and now on this rock named Whidbey Island. My palette of colors has changed with the environment but I am always striving to convey my inner language and emotions in paint.
I love the directness and immediacy of soft pastels, a dry medium. With no brush between my fingers and the pastel stick, I can capture a moment and place with vivid, luminous, colors. This is especially fulfilling in plein air painting where I sit outdoors painting a scene. In my studio, I mentally enter a scene and image the sounds, smells, textures, light and air of the place and the journey of creating begins. That gives me peace.
